“Bookworm Deluxe” – Add new words to the dictionary

by on Feb.24, 2010, under PC Game Hints & Tips

Despite three revisions of this game being released, there is still no documented way to add your own words to the inbuilt dictionary … until now!

If you’ve ever been addicted to word games, you’ve probably stumbled across PopCap Games Bookworm Deluxe, an addictive and stimulating game that involves finding words hidden within a grid of letters. While the dictionary within the game is extensive, during gameplay I’ve come across quite a few words within the playfield that just aren’t listed, which can be quite frustrating after you’ve spent 10 minutes manuevering the letters into position.

Despite three revisions of this game being released, there is still no documented way to add your own words to the inbuilt dictionary … until now!

To add additional words to Bookworm Deluxe’s dictionary just follow these simple steps:

Locate the Bookworm Deluxe installation directory (the default location is C:Program FilesPopCap GamesBookWorm Deluxe.)

Make a backup copy of the wordlist.txt file somewhere so you can replace it if you want to return Bookworm Deluxe to its default configuration (or in case you make a mistake when adding words!)

Open up the wordlist.txt file in a text editor like Notepad or WordPad.

You’ll notice that the dictionary words within this file have been encrypted and/or jumbled.

To add words to the dictionary, simply type them in ABOVE the current first line of the file (ie. above the “aa” line.) Make sure that there is only one word to a line and that each word is no more than 12 characters in length. Note that if you do add a word that is longer than 12 characters, the game will crash when you attempt to highlight it during play! In addition, do not type in any characters on or below the “aa” line as this WILL cause issues with existing words within the dictionary.

Save the file and start up Bookworm Deluxe to use your newly enhanced dictionary.

If you’re looking for word lists to import into the game, you can find a heap of them at Kevin’s Word List page.

Happy Bookworming!

    Bookworm in driving me crazy!

It is irritating enough that Bookworm Deluxe will grab a word before I’m done and credit me with the smaller score, but the darn thing does it with the bonus words too. I just spent forever lining up thane, carefully chose the letters and it grabbed it as than. Grrrr. Any way to disable the premature word grabbing?

Yep, just click the left mouse button down and don’t release it until you have selected the word you want. Just tested it with the trial game and didn’t have any problems.

Thanks! I didn’t even know you could choose letters & words by holding down the left mouse button, it’s much faster play.

Up to now I’ve been working on a translation of the German Bookworm dictionary to plain text to get an overview over the alphabetical order of the word list. I did’t know another way for adding words to the word list, but it’s a very very long and boring way. So I was really happy when I read your tip for adding words to the dictionary. But unfortunately your tip doesn’t work with the German dictionary: None of the words I added this way could be used in the game – apparently Bookworm wants to work off the whole alphabetical order of its word list. So I will be going on with this dull translation job…
    Thanks anyway!

Do you have an update on how to change the word list in Bookworm? Once I try to save word additions I get an “access denied”. How do I get around that?

I re-read my article. It sounds suspiciously like you don’t have permissions to edit the wordlist.txt file. As it normally sits under Program Files or Program Files (x86), and I’m guessing you are using Windows 7, you probably just need to login as an Administrator on your PC, to edit the file.
