Hints and Tips for Sierra’s “Mission Force: Cyberstorm” turn-based strategy game.

Excerpt from Cmdr. Rystal’s address to Repple Draft 76221-9, Mos Alma base, Pyros IV: “… and for those of you who think that questioning MSI’s operational and strategic plans is a ticket to promotion, I cordially remind you of Ensign Hibert’s gaff when she referred to the Main Synthetic Intelligence as ‘Cynthia’ over open channels during a SEAR op. Hibert made her final operation two weeks later; sealed in a Sensei bomb drone …”

“Azrael’s Tear” Walkthrough – Part 2

by on Feb.17, 2010, under PC Game Hints & Tips, PC Retro Gaming

Please do not immerse your MS-2 helmet during normal operation…

Note: You won’t find this article within the CGOnline Archives; it appears to have been lost at some stage in the distant past. Below is the unedited original submission (it would seem unfair to not provide the full solution to this game after you’ve gone through the first half!) As such, there are no screenshots either; if I ever manage to locate them, I’ll update this post in the future.

“… I’ll have to apologise for that scream. The last thing I expected to see in this god-forsaken place was a pair of saurian’s straight out of the Cambrian Era; I nearly emptied my entire clip into ’em until I realised they were herbivorous. The helm’s given me a low dose soporific to counteract the adrenalin levels; I should be OK in a few minutes …”

“The Ardennes Offensive” Hints and Tips – Part 2

by on Feb.15, 2010, under PC Game Hints & Tips, PC Retro Gaming

Part II: Stemming the tide. Also included are some strategy tips from Roger Keating, one of SSG’s developers.

Quite a few players have commented that The Ardennes Offensive seems highly unbalanced in favor of the Allies (especially during the first 5-6 days of the campaign); however, while it is admittedly more difficult to play a competent German Offense during this stage, it is by no means impossible to do so. A friendly challenge from Roger Keating (AI designer for The Ardennes Offensive) was eagerly accepted … and within five game days my tough, disciplined Yanks were looking very ragged around the edges with Roger’s panzers making massive gains across the map. Now the game is far from over yet, but hopefully some of the mistakes made and ideas gleaned will help other player’s formulate a more cohesive Allied response. Roger also kindly provided some simple guidelines to handling the German Panzer Divisions (see below); players of both sides will certainly benefit from reading them.

“The Ardennes Offensive” Hints and Tips – Part 1

by on Feb.15, 2010, under PC Game Hints & Tips, PC Retro Gaming

Wacht am Rhein – Objective: Antwerp.

Actually, the subtitle of this article is a bit of a misnomer; the Germans weren’t really in a position to make it to Antwerp and only Hitler truly believed that his grand strategy could succeed. Nevertheless, several staffers at OKW, resigned to carrying out the Führer’s directives, were of the opinion that a more limited operational objective could be achieved. A few months respite from the incessant U.S. and Commonwealth forces could have been achieved by either shattering the U.S. divisions in Belgium or, even more spectacularly, by capturing Liege and the huge supply dumps that were situated around this city at the time. The Ardennes Offensive gives the German player the opportunity to see if those more realistic goals could have been met. For this article we’ll concentrate on playing the Germans in the “Last Blitzkrieg” scenario; one of the more enjoyable scenarios for the Wehrmacht.

“Battleground: Antietam” Hints and Tips

by on Feb.14, 2010, under PC Game Hints & Tips, PC Retro Gaming

Preparing for the Bloodiest Day

When it comes to simulations of American Civil War battles, many gamers will readily agree that TalonSoft’s Battleground Series is peerless in its grandeur. The treatment of command and control, unit manoeuvre and firepower projection, the vagaries of battle etc. have all been faithfully recreated with this regiment-level system. Indeed, those grognards who have played paper wargames in the past will immediately notice the inherent similarities to Richard Berg’s “Great Battles of the American Civil War” games; another critically acclaimed system. As the challenges of effective ACW combat are legion, I’ve attempted to formulate this work with an eye to providing the reader with basic strategies and tactics necessary for either Johnny Reb or Billy Yank to fight and win within the bloodied cornfields and shattered woods around Sharpsburg.

“Wargame Analysis and Recommendation System” review

An “Aide de Camp” for miniatures gamers.

The Oxford Concise Dictionary defines serendipity as “The faculty for making happy and unexpected discoveries by accident.” Much to my surprise and delight it was just such an event which led to my fortuitous meeting over the Internet with Terry Phillips and the discovery of his WARS project.

“Treasure Quest” review

by on Feb.14, 2010, under PC Game Reviews, PC Retro Gaming

You’ll either love this game to death … or loathe it with a vengeance.

Jim Hawkins was in a fix and he knew it. “Prepare to meet your maker” screamed Long John Silver (who despite his title actually preferred to wear boxer shorts.) The fearsome swashbuckler tottered towards the cowering Jim, his ubiquitous parrot struggling to maintain it’s balance upon his shoulder. With an evil gleam in his eyes (we’re assuming the one under the patch also had a gleam,) he slowly raised his cutlass and … ahem … sorry about that.

“iF-16” review

by on Feb.14, 2010, under PC Game Reviews, PC Retro Gaming

Flying a bit too close to the ground.

iF-16… “the definitive simulation of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.” At first glance, the caption might imbue the reader with visions of a highly detailed physics model with six degrees of freedom, a dozen highly complex heads-up and multi-function display modes, sophisticated avionics systems and a plethora of accurately modeled weapons. Unfortunately, Interactive Magic’s latest title dispels that impression from the moment the box is opened. iF-16 manifests itself as a medium-complexity simulation aimed squarely at a nebulous middle ground where it fails to satisfy either the hard-core sim jockey or the rookie pilot fresh out of flight school.
